“It’s time for you to leave this motel,” Norman said, struggling to keep his voice calm though every fiber of his being wanted to yell at this man.

“Calm down, man.”

“I’ll refund your stay,” he continued. “Even for last night. But I won’t let you stay on this property one moment longer.”

“This isn’t what you think it is,” Dex said. His heavy camera still sat on his shoulder and Norman wondered if Dex was filming even as they spoke. But right now he didn’t care. He needed Dex and his film crew to leave before any more negative videos came out about his business.

“I know you planted evidence on your last film,” Norman announced. “My son looked up your production company. You planted evidence to get better ratings. And now you’re here staging scenes.”

“We’ll go to the press,” Olivia said, heated as she stepped closer to Dex. “And the police if we have to. This is libel.”

“I promise you it’s not like that,” Dex said. He handed off his camera to one of his guys and Norman breathed a sigh of relief. At least they weren’t being filmed as they confronted Dex and his production company.

“I’m sure the Boston Globe would be interested to hear your company is still out there lying,” Norman threatened. “They were the ones who broke the story the first time, weren’t they?”

“They never understood what we were doing,” Dex said. His voice was calm and controlled, not at all the fear of someone getting caught in a lie. “We never claimed to be a real documentary crew. That’s not who we are. We’re working on something innovative. It’s a new genre of cinema.”

“Dex, these people are getting antsy.”

One of Dex’s crew nodded toward the two-dozen people who were starting to lay their signs on the ground and take seats on the curb.

“Get a few more takes,” Dex said. He pointed toward the guy with the camera and nodded for them to take his spot. Then Dex walked Olivia and Norman a few feet away, where they could talk further.

“I want you to leave,” Norman said again. “Send these people home right now and pack up your things.”

“Let me explain what I’m doing,” he pleaded. “We’re shining a light on the irony of documentaries. We’re trying to show people how quickly innocent people get accused of horrible crimes. Innocent people like the two of you.”

This stopped Norman, who glanced over at Olivia. Dex’s videos had announced Norman and Olivia as the prime suspects in the murder, but now Dex was calling them innocent. What was this man up to?

“You can watch my footage,” Dex offered. “I’ll show you what we’re actually working on. If you still don’t like it, we’ll pack up and leave. I promise.”

“He’s just trying to get more time,” Olivia said. “You just want to get your filming done, so you’re trying to distract us.”

“Come see what we’re putting together,” he said again. “This isn’t what you think.”

Norman was torn. On one hand, he agreed with Olivia.
